The ScreenCloud player uses Chromium to display its online content, such as links, Dashboards, and certain apps. Chromium is a free and open-source web browser project, primarily developed and maintained by Google. It is a widely used codebase that provides the vast majority of code for Google Chrome and many other browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Samsung Internet, and Opera. In addition, several app frameworks also use the code.
Because our apps grab content from third-party providers, each of the services is built with its own complexity level and requires more recent versions of Chromium to perform properly or even display. On top of this, each OS version of the hardware we support is built with different versions of Chromium. Eventually, a problem might arise with older models of hardware that are limited by their specs. These devices eventually can not be updated by the manufacturer, and they reach their Chromium version limit. When this happens, it can cause issues with the newer or more advanced apps, as they require newer Chromium versions to run.
Below we have listed versions of OSs and their Chromium limitations, which in turn limit the ScreenCloud player when displaying the more advanced apps that require newer versions of Chromium.
Tizen 4 - Chromium 56
Tizen 6.5 - Chromium 85
Tizen 7 - Chromium 94
webOS 4.1 - Chromium 53
webOS 6.0 - Chromium 79
BrightSign OS 8.0.x - Chromium 65
BrightSign OS 8.4.x, 8.3.x, 8.2.x, 8.1.x - Chromium 69
BrightSign OS 8.5.x, 9.0.x - Chromium 87
The confirmed apps that are not able to play on older Chromium versions are listed below:
Canva app (Chromium 85 and lower are not compatible)
Digital Menu Board app (Chromium 56 and lower are not compatible)
Microsoft Power BI app (Chromium 93 and lower are not compatible)
ScreenCloud Broadcast app (Chromium 56 and lower are not compatible)
RSS feed app (Chromium 56 and lower are not compatible)
Slack app (Chromium 56 and lower are not compatible)
The error messages onscreen may vary for each app. For example, the Canva app reveals the "Please update your browser" message (Pictured above), while the Microsoft Power BI app will display its loading screen, the Power BI icon on a white background.
To test this yourself, you can open the built-in internet browser tool on your screen or device and run a public link of your content and then the chromiumchecker link to see what version it is limited to. If there is an error message asking you to update your internet browser from your app, this means the ScreenCloud player's Chromium version is limited by the hardware OS and can't play that specific content.
