How To Test Pre-Release Versions of ScreenCloud OS Using Our Canary OTA Update Channel

Test pre-release versions of ScreenCloud OS on your environment with the Canary OTA update channel.

Updated over a month ago

With so many of our customers’ screens powered by ScreenCloud OS devices, we know how important and mission critical ScreenCloud OS is to our customers.

As such, we also know how important it is for our customers to be able to test major new versions of ScreenCloud OS before they are fully released and rolled out. By testing pre-release versions of major new versions of ScreenCloud OS with their content, network setups and other aspects of their environments, our customers can be assured that everything works without issue, and in the case where they do spot issues, they can report them to us and then see them fixed in subsequent pre-release versions of ScreenCloud OS.

In preparation for ScreenCloud OS 3.0, our third and biggest ScreenCloud OS release, we’ve added new options to both ScreenCloud OS and our RDM Console that allow our customers to test pre-release versions of ScreenCloud OS.

And the good news is that it’s really easy to do!

All you have to do is select a ScreenCloud OS device to use as a test device and set it to use our Canary OTA update channel, and your device will then receive both pre-release and production versions of ScreenCloud OS.

Here’s how to do that.

How to set your ScreenCloud OS test device to use the Canary OTA update channel

In your account, select your username at the bottom left and then select “Screens Manager”.

Next, select “Remote Device Management” to launch the RDM Console.

Select the ScreenCloud OS device that you would like to use as your test device for testing pre-release versions of ScreenCloud OS.

Next, select the 3 dot menu and then select “OS Update Settings”.

Then change the OTA update channel to be used from “Stable” to instead be “Canary” and then select “Apply”. You will then get a notice telling you the OS update settings have been updated.

And that’s it! Your ScreenCloud OS device will now receive both pre-release versions of ScreenCloud OS via the Canary OTA update channel as well as production versions of ScreenCloud OS.

How to switch a ScreenCloud OS device from running a pre-release version of ScreenCloud OS to instead using a production version of ScreenCloud OS via re-flashing

As noted earlier, if you set your ScreenCloud OS device to use the Canary OTA update channel, it will receive both pre-release and production versions of ScreenCloud OS.

But what if you want to change your ScreenCloud OS test device back to being a normal ScreenCloud OS device running a production version of ScreenCloud OS?

You could change the OTA update channel from “Canary” back to “Stable”, but then you would have to wait until the next production version of ScreenCloud OS is released before your device would start running the production version of ScreenCloud OS again.

If you wanted to make the switch right away though that’s possible though. All you’d have to do would be to re-flash your ScreenCloud OS device to the latest production version of ScreenCloud OS, as re-flashing a ScreenCloud OS device would completely replace everything on your device.

To find out how to use our SD Flasher tool to re-flash your ScreenCloud OS device with the latest production version of ScreenCloud OS, see here.
