How to Wipe a Chromebit in Preparation for Enrollment

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to wipe a Chromebit in preparation for enrollment.

Updated over a month ago

For this process, you will need to attach a Bluetooth or Wired Keyboard and Mouse.

When you have a Chromebit that has been used prior to setting up for enrollment, you need to wipe the Chromebit to return it to its original (factory) state. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the Chromebit by removing the power cord.

2. Push a paperclip (or pushpin) into the recovery button hole (the recovery button hole is circled in the image below) while reconnecting the power cord (to turn on the device).

This is what you should see on the screen:

3. Press Ctrl + D on the keyboard to enter Developer Mode.

4. Once again, push a paperclip (or pushpin) into the recovery button hole once. The device reboots and displays a red exclamation point.

Do not press SPACE but go to the next step!

5. Press Ctrl + D on your keyboard. The Chromebit reboots and starts the transition to Developer Mode. This clears all local data, a process that takes approximately 10 minutes.

You will see this screen:

Followed by this screen below. Wait until the loading bar at the top reaches 100% (This process will take up to 5 minutes):

6. At the startup screen, press the Spacebar, and then press Enter to reboot the device and return to verified mode.

Your device has now been wiped and reset and is ready for enrollment!

If forced re-enrollment is enabled for the device, you'll see a note that Developer Mode is blocked. This shortens the wipe process and still allows for re-enrollment when the device automatically reboots into verified mode.

If you're using a managed Chromebox for your school or business, follow these steps to enroll the device.
