Why Some Apps Don't Work on Older Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, and BrightSign Devices

This guide explains why some apps or links won’t display on older hardware with outdated Chromium versions, even on supported devices.

What is Chromium?

The ScreenCloud player uses Chromium to display its online content, such as links and certain apps. Chromium is a free and open-source web browser project, primarily developed and maintained by Google. It is a widely used codebase that provides the vast majority of code for Google Chrome and many other browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Samsung Internet, and Opera. In addition, several app frameworks also use the code.

Because our apps grab content from third-party providers, each of the services is built with its own complexity level and requires more recent versions of Chromium to perform properly or even display. On top of this, each OS version of the hardware we support is built with different versions of Chromium. Eventually, a problem might arise with older models of hardware that are limited by their specs. These devices eventually can not be updated by the manufacturer, and they reach their Chromium version limit. When this happens, it can cause issues with the newer or more advanced apps, as they require newer Chromium versions to run.

Chromium version by device OS

Below we have listed versions of OSs and their Chromium limitations, which in turn limit the ScreenCloud player when displaying the more advanced apps that require newer versions of Chromium.

  • Tizen 4 - Chromium 56

  • Tizen 6.5 - Chromium 85

  • Tizen 7 - Chromium 94

  • webOS 4.1 - Chromium 53

  • webOS 6.0 - Chromium 79

  • BrightSign OS 8.0.x - Chromium 65

  • BrightSign OS 8.4.x, 8.3.x, 8.2.x, 8.1.x - Chromium 69

  • BrightSign OS 8.5.x, 9.0.x - Chromium 87

Apps affected by Chromium limitations

The confirmed apps that are not able to play on older Chromium versions are listed below:

Chromium 85 and lower are not compatible

Chromium 93 and lower are not compatible

Chromium 56 and lower are not compatible

Digital Menu Board app

RSS feed app

ScreenCloud Broadcast app

Slack app

What you'll see on screen

The app will appear blank, black, white, or grey on screen. Taking a Screenshot in your screen settings will show the same result. Note that the app preview in your ScreenCloud account will appear normal.

In some cases, an error message may appear instead. For example, the Canva app displays a "Please update your browser" message (see article image), and the Microsoft Power BI app will be stuck on its loading screen, showing the Power BI icon on a white background.

Apps affected on LG webOS Signage specifically

For webOS Signage specifically, you will find the below apps can run on webOS Signage 4.1. but cannot run on webOS Signage 6.0.

  • All News apps: Business & Finance, Entertainment, Natural World, Headline, On This Day, Sports, and Technology News.

  • Facebook Recommendation

  • Google Alert

  • Microsoft Team

  • Quick post

  • RSS Feed

  • Slack

  • Microsoft OneDrive

  • Microsoft Teams

Canvas on LG webOS Signage 4.1 and 6.0

For the Canvas app, please note that text formatting, spacing, and layout may not always render exactly as designed or appear the same across players and devices running the older Chromium versions, and this has been confirmed with LG webOS Signage 4.1 and 6.0 ScreenCloud players. This can result in issues such as overlapping text or misaligned elements. To improve compatibility and avoid text issues, we recommend adjusting the text box size, reviewing both formatted and unformatted text to prevent overlap, and converting any images that do not display correctly into standard flat JPG files instead of transparent PNGs (a limitation of LG webOS Signage 4.1).

How to check your device's chromium version

To test this yourself, you can open the built-in internet browser tool on your screen or device and run a public link of your content and then the chromiumchecker link to see what version it is limited to. If there is an error message asking you to update your internet browser from your app, this means the ScreenCloud player's Chromium version is limited by the hardware OS and can't play that specific content.
