Why PIXI Is the Best Replacement for Your Aging Fire TV Stick

Learn why PIXI is the perfect replacement for your outdated Fire TV Sticks

Updated this week

Time to Upgrade Your Older Fire TV Stick for a Smoother Experience

If you're currently using an older Fire TV Stick to run ScreenCloud, you might start noticing some hiccups, slower performance, unresponsive screens, or unexpected behavior. That’s because some Fire TV Stick models are no longer supported or may soon experience issues due to changes in Amazon's Fire OS.

But don’t worry, we’ve got a better way forward. Meet PIXI, our purpose-built digital signage device, offering a smoother, faster, and more reliable experience.

Why This Matters

We’ve identified that some Fire TV Stick devices, especially older ones, are prone to issues like:

  • Slower load times and reduced performance

  • Increased chance of crashing or freezing

  • Incompatibility with future Fire OS updates

  • Missing key features like auto-restart on crash or start at boot

To give you the best possible experience, we recommend switching to our ScreenCloud PIXI device.

Which Devices Are Affected?

If you're using one of the following Fire TV Stick models, you may be affected:

Devices with known issues:

  • Fire TV Stick HD Alexa Voice Remote (2024) — AFTSS

  • Fire TV Stick Lite 1st Gen (2020) — AFTSS

  • Fire TV Stick 2nd Gen (2016–2019) — AFTT

  • Fire TV Cube 1st Gen (2018) — AFTA

  • Fire TV Stick Basic Edition (2017) — AFTT

  • Fire TV 3rd Gen (2017) — AFTN

  • Fire TV 2nd Gen (2015) — AFTS

  • Fire TV Stick 1st Gen (2014) — AFTM

  • Fire TV 1st Gen (2014) — AFTB

Devices that are powerful but not compatible with all ScreenCloud features:

  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen (2023) — AFTKRT

  • Fire TV Stick 4K 2nd Gen (2023) — AFTKM

These newer models run Fire OS 8, which doesn’t support our start at boot and recover from crash features.

How to Check Your Device Type

Using a mix of old and new Firesticks? No problem. You can check the version of your Fire TV Stick directly in your ScreenCloud Studio:

  1. Open Screens Manager in the Studio app.

  2. Look at the device model listed under each screen.

  3. If you see one of the models listed above — it’s time to think PIXI.
