ScreenCloud regularly delivers updates to players and supported hardware to improve performance and reliability. Updates are designed to roll out safely with minimal disruption, while giving users flexibility to manage how and when their devices receive new versions, including options for automatic updates, manual updates, and early access to pre-release player versions through the Canary channel.
How hardware and player updates are released
ScreenCloud uses a staged rollout when releasing player updates. Rather than updating all devices at once, new versions are gradually released to increasing percentages of players—typically 1%, 5%, 20%, 50%, and finally 100%. This phased approach allows ScreenCloud to monitor performance, identify potential issues early, and minimize the impact of any unexpected problems.
Before any update enters production, it undergoes rigorous testing by a dedicated team to help ensure stability and reliability. Once testing is complete, the update is released using the staged rollout process.
If your player is running a version that isn’t yet listed in the player changelogs (see links below), it’s likely part of an active rollout stage. If no issues are reported or identified during each phase, the update is gradually rolled out to all devices.
How devices stay up to date
Most ScreenCloud players and supported hardware update automatically during the rollout process. As long as the device is connected to the internet and automatic updates are enabled, no manual action is required.
Automatic updates apply to all online players that have not been disabled for receiving OTA updates.
If you notice your device is not updated to the latest available OS version, you can update it by installing the latest OS version or by connecting with the support team (for ScreenCloud OS and PIXI hardware)
To check which version your device should be running, please refer to the change logs release pages.
Pay attention to warning notifications for your screens, which will remind you if a player is out of date and needs updating. Updating devices as soon as possible will ensure your screens continue to run reliably.
How to stop your device from receiving OTA updates
ScreenCloud players and supported hardware receive updates automatically via over-the-air (OTA) updates. Disabling OTA updates is possible for certain types of hardware and players but strongly not recommended. Automatic updates ensure your device receives bug fixes, performance improvements, and compatibility updates.
If OTA updates are disabled, your device may:
Experience unresolved bugs or playback issues
Become incompatible with newer ScreenCloud features or content
Require manual intervention to update in the future
Experience screen outages that could have been avoided
If you still need to stop player updates despite these warnings, you can do so by disabling Automatic Updates for the ScreenCloud Windows and macOS players via the player side menu.
For ScreenCloud OS, it is possible to submit a request to ScreenCloud Support to exclude specific devices from receiving updates by providing their device IDs. Please note that this option is typically only considered for larger organizations with specific deployment requirements or specialized setups that necessitate this level of control. Our support team will review the request and, if appropriate, coordinate with the ScreenCloud OS team. Other player types do not currently support disabling over-the-air (OTA) updates.
We strongly recommend against disabling OTA updates to keep your device secure, stable, and fully supported.
Testing early releases with the Canary channel
The Canary channel is an optional update channel that provides early access to new player features, improvements, and fixes before they are released to devices on the Stable channel. Canary builds are used for real-world testing and validation to help ensure updates are reliable prior to wider rollout.
Using the Canary channel can be helpful if you want early access to upcoming features or need to test updates before deploying them more broadly, ensuring your on-screen content continues to run smoothly. Keep in mind that the Canary channel is not recommended for mission-critical screens. For most production environments, the Stable channel remains the best choice.
If you encounter any issues while using a Canary version, please contact our support team so they can be addressed ahead of the official release. Feedback from Canary users plays an important role in improving update quality for everyone.
Devices set to the Canary channel receive updates automatically, just like those on the Stable channel, as long as they are connected to the internet. Canary updates are delivered earlier and more frequently as part of the testing process.
Here are the ways you can enable Canary for your device and OS:
How to enable Canary for ScreenCloud OS
Go to Screens or Studio > Screens Manager.
Find and select the device.
Select the device icon to open its settings menu.
Select Settings.
Select OS Update.
Choose Canary
For image samples of the setting, see here.
How to enable Canary for PIXI
Open the ScreenCloud side menu on the PIXI device.
Go to Settings > OS Update.
Change the Update Channel to Canary.
Confirm and allow the update to install.
For image samples of the setting, see here.
How to enable Canary for the ScreenCloud player on other devices
Open the ScreenCloud side menu.
Open the dropdown list under Update Channel and select Canary
Restart the player or leave it to update on it's own soon.
For image samples of the setting, see here.
To switch back to Stable, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the ScreenCloud player or factory reset the device if ScreenCloud comes pre-installed (PIXI and ScreenCloud OS). Afterwards, make sure that Canary is not selected for the OS Update channel in Studio as well.
The Canary update channel (pre-release player versions) is currently only available for ScreenCloud OS, desktop players (Windows and macOS), PIXI, and Samsung Tizen players.
