What is cache and why do I need to clear it?
Cache is a computing term, related to technology hardware and software, that is used to store data and information. It allows for quicker loading time of websites you frequently visit as the cache on your computer and browser can store data for web pages, the refreshing of apps, and can also store content on devices you're using for digital signage.
The ScreenCloud player app can cache images, videos, and documents that you upload to your account. After at least one playthrough of your content on a device you're using to display digital signage, the device will cache the content and continue to play it if you lose a stable internet connection, ensuring that you will still have content showing on your TV screens. Please note: Streaming apps require an internet connection and will not cache (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, and Live News).
Commonly, you will need to clear your cache on occasion as other apps in the event of losing internet connection will cache but can remain stuck on the last available data displayed from when your device was connected to the internet. For example, the weather app can still show weather updates and time on screen, though it could be showing delayed information from days ago as the device cached the app from the last point it was connected to the internet.
You can find the "Clear Cache" option in the ScreenCloud player app's side menu or directly in your Screens section of the user interface for each screen that is paired to your ScreenCloud account. Continue below to learn where these options can be found, and which operating systems allow the app to perform the clear cache action.
How do I clear the cache for the ScreenCloud app?
Below are instructions for each of our available players on how to clear the cache.
i) Clear cache for any screen in your ScreenCloud account
The easiest way to clear the cache for your ScreenCloud Player app is by logging into your ScreenCloud account and visiting the Screens section. From here, you can click the Clear Cache button to perform the clear cache remotely for your device.
The button is depicted by three disks laid atop each other and can be found on the right of your screen, where all other details for the screen are contained. If you do not see a clear cache button, however, this would be because the operating system does not allow for this action for our app. Please take a look below to find out which ScreenCloud players do not have this option.
Once you click the clear cache button, you'll be asked to confirm the cache clear for your screen. Please note, that you will no longer be able to play content that was cached or stored offline to display without an internet connection. The device will require at least one playthrough of your new or updated content to cache it for displaying during any future connectivity issues or internet downtime.
