How to Set Up Microsoft Two-Step Verification for Dashboards

Use this guide to set up 2FA with Microsoft for Dashboards. Credentials are encrypted and stored in the cloud for secure dashboard displays.

This setup requires that you already use an authenticator app, Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, on your phone. The steps below cover the process using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

How to obtain your secret key credentials from Microsoft

If your organization uses Microsoft two-step verification (2FA) to log in to your required Dashboard, you'll need an Account Name and Secret Key from Microsoft to enter during your Dashboard configuration.

We recommend using a service account instead of your Microsoft work account, since work accounts may require device or email confirmation to log in. This requirement is usually set by your Microsoft admin team for security.

Step 1: On your computer

  1. Go to Account Settings > Security info and delete your current Authenticator app connection (only if you have other means of logging, such as with password and phone verification).

  2. Select + Add sign-in Method

  3. Select Microsoft Authenticator

  4. Select Set up a different authenticator app

  5. Select Next

  6. Select Can't scan the QR code?

  7. Copy your Account name and Secret key somewhere safe. The details in the image below are examples only.

Step 2: On your phone

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  2. Tap the Scan QR code or QR code icon (bottom right) button

  3. Select Enter code manually

  4. Select Other (Google, Facebook, etc.).

  5. Input the Account name and Secret key you copied, and select Finish

  6. The connection is now made and it should be generating an OTP code

For steps on how to connect to the Google Authenticator app instead, please see this article.

Step 3: Final verification

  1. At the Enter the following into Authenticator step in your Microsoft account, select Next and enter the OTP code from your phone, and select Next again.

  2. The connection has been made - You can hit Done

  3. You will now see the new Authenticator app connection in your Microsoft account — and this time, you know its Secret Key.

The Secret key you copied and saved can be used in the Dashboard journey steps. You can also use the same Account name if you like, but that is not a necessity.

Continue below to see the secret key is used for your Dashboard setup.
