Android Hardware

All you need to know about ScreenCloud and Android hardware.

Updated yesterday

Android devices are an affordable and flexible option for running ScreenCloud, but it’s important to understand that not all Android devices are the same. Manufacturers use different versions of Android, which can affect performance and compatibility.

There are two main types of Android devices:

  • Standard Android / Android Open Source (AOSP)
These include many Android boxes, tablets, and phones. They typically have access to the full Google Play Store, which means broader support for business apps and features. However, there is significant variation in hardware quality, performance, and user experience between devices. Because of this inconsistency, we don’t generally recommend most Android AOSP devices. While many can work with ScreenCloud if they meet our minimum requirements, devices not listed as recommended should be tested before deployment.

For the most reliable and seamless experience, we recommend choosing ScreenCloud’s own Android powered PIXI media player. PIXI is purpose-built and optimized specifically for ScreenCloud, eliminating the inconsistencies often found with third-party Android devices.

  • Android TV devices
These include many Android-powered TVs and some streaming boxes. Android TV uses a more limited version of the Google Play Store, with fewer supported apps and features. However, Android TV devices provide a more consistent experience due to Google’s certified Android TV program. As a result, we typically recommend Android TV devices, provided they meet our minimum system requirements.

Minimum requirements

  • Comes with the Google Play Store preinstalled (otherwise you will need to side-load our app and update it manually, (see here)

  • Android 7.1.2 or higher

  • Dual-core processor or higher (preferably quad-core processor or higher)

  • 2 GB of RAM or higher (preferably 4 GB of RAM or higher)

  • 8 GB of storage or higher (preferably 32 GB of storage or higher)
